Zan! You talk about a guy that doesn't get enough cred and applause for creating interesting music, being dedicated to L'ville, and generally keeping it "real" for the last 20+ years. That guy is worldwide on the tape trading networks of the pre(and post)internets and has a tape collection that rents its own one bedroom apartment on Goldsmith lane.

Some of my fondest early musical moments are of Grand Brother.

Props to Zan. I was using the image of grand Brother doing the mariachi thing being the sole source of ryzek's second-hand self-importance to take the idea into an extreme of absurdity. To me, there was really nowhere else to go with it, since the defensive name dropping on his part basically played out as," I somehow wind up being friends with any musical act locally that is moderately commercially viable, categorizing me as a reporter or desperate hanger-on for anyone willing to play radio ready date rape music."

Wax Factory rocks
December 30, 2008 01:01 AM

Jason Hobbs and the fellas of Wax Factory will ring in 2009 surrounded by hundreds of troops.

The Louisville cover band will play a New Year's Eve show at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba.

"As it gets closer, we realize it's going to be pretty special," said Hobbs, an English teacher at Eastern High School.

The frontman, along with guitarist Danny De La Cruz, drummer Ryan Murphy and bassist Joe Stephens, flew commercial to Atlanta and then rode on a military plane to the base.

So what will the crew play when the clock strikes midnight and 2008 comes to a close?

"We'll cater to them," Hobbs said.

Maybe they played "Torture" by the Jacksons?

Have you seen Zan riding his bike recently? I think I saw him get hit by a car in front of skull alley a while back and wondered how he's doing. If it wasn't him, the dude looked A LOT like him.

The guy is a troll, and a hilarious one!
Nobody says "chops, licks, and riffs"!
And how would he know Syd's "real" name?

Wow, this thread has devolved into one moronic response after another. I guess I should have expected no less from the bastions of the local "hardcore" scene. For all of those who goof on Wax Factory, Jason happens to be a fantastic songwriter, and the band does have SEVERAL originals that they perform on a very regular basis. Jason took lessons in guitar and songwriting, and it shows.

As far as other bands go, no, I don't know "Quarter Bounce," but Steve from Jefferson Tarc Bus has been a close friend of mine for years, (hence the Voodoo Machine reference,) and he and I have actually written together (a song called "High On Rock," if anyone owns the first cd.)

As far as "chops, licks, and riffs" go, perhaps if anyone here had taken lessons, or possessed any of these qualities, they would know that yes, musicians DO use these terms. In looking into the Myspace pages of most bands listed on this site, all I hear is Dimebag Darrel-style chugging and noise with little-to-no understanding of even a blues scale. Do yourselves a favor and actually try to be good.

Mr. Bell - it's obvious that "Syd" is a big Sex Pistols fan.

Am I talking to a bunch of 15-year-olds here?

Wrong Syd. But I'm thrilled to know that you are really a real person name-dropping someone from Jefferson Tarc Bus. I salute you! Thanks for existing.

Now, can you do us the solid of posting "High On Rock" in the file format of your choice?

What's funny is the only real reason to be in a cover band around here is to bang the middle-aged cougars that come out to Phoenix Hill. Maybe that would seem like "all the right reasons" to those weekend warriors that pray at the alter of Rock of Love Bus with Bret Michaels.

OK guys, which is it -- are we trying to get underage girls or overage cougars? Plz let me know soon before our next show so I can figure out which demographic to target with my chops, licks and riffs.

Well, since someone actually seems interested in hearing it, here you go: http://www.sendspace.com/file/l2jz4m

A little melody never hurt anybody, guys. And guess what, I already know that even if any of you truly liked it, you'd never admit it.

And hey, "Old Man on the Mountain," someone with your screen name should probably stick to the cougars, buddy.
