Disraeli Gears is more interesting and better than Vincebus Eruptum or Outsideinside. That's coming from somebody who hates Eric Clapton. Blue Cheer is overrated.

Also, Black Sabbath invented heavy metal. Blue Cheer just steered rock in that direction.

I wouldn't say Blue Cheer is overrated. They're revered, but I doubt they sold many records. Their last tour was mostly in small clubs. They played The Dame in 2006 to, I think, 120 people?

I feel like some people act like they invented heavy metal. They're a slightly above average heavy psychedelic rock band at best.

post youtube links to all of this so us lazy people can decide for ourselves

Black Sabbath by absolutely no means whatsoever -invented- heavy metal. Made it popular? Sure. Invented? You gotta be fucking kidding. Granted, this turns into a total grey area of where you define the starting point, but it wouldn't be Sabbath. Black Sabbath to metal is what the Beatles are to everything they made popular...not the originators, but the band that brought the music to a large audience.

Blue Cheer would definitely be a precursor metal band.

Soundwise you could take your pick. But when I think of "metal" I think of some dark, grim, "evil" bullshit and the easy choice is Sabbath. But I know there was other stuff like this around that time. Shit, Pentagram could have been before. You get into an argument about who was first and all that.

I'd put Deep Purple higher up on that list than Sabbath or Zeppelin any day of the week.

to me.. the beginning of metal is the breakdown at the end of the song Black Sabbath. It conjures up the imagery and lyrics(for better or worse) that came with it.

I think this is a good call.

I still think about all of the shit that was played and never preserved. The heavy metal timeline could have started earlier than we think. We are only exposed to what was made public.

Who am I? I think early sixties Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart is punk rock.

It's like any other genre...there's always the 1 band that really breaks out and all the other bands become obscure, and deeply cherished by nerds. And yes, my roomate has one of the most extensive and diverse libraries I've ever seen.

Totally legit argument. No lie. I don't think of punk rock in terms of genre so much anymore as much as I do in terms of attitude. Chuck Berry was punk rock enough.

I think trying to define where punk started is far more difficult to pin down than metal, that's for sure. The easiest way is to go by when the term is applied...but you can always pick out the precursors.
