Nobody *owns* art.

People can claim that they create art and ask for royalties, but nobody *owns* it. That reduces art to an economic tool like commodities and services rather than recognizing its higher purpose.

And what is that "higher purpose"?

As a means to bring people together. For emotional release, both for the creator and the audience. For discussion. As a means to greater understand the human experience.

You can only find Care-A-Lot if you believe in it.

Who owns a fart? The person who produced the fart? Those who have taken the fart into their nostrils? Does the cook who prepared the food that went into creating the gasses that fuled the fart have any claim to the work?
By the way, I definitely believe any fart worth talking about meets Adie's definition of art.

Cute.

It's all just differences in perception. These types of conversations hardly ever produce any real agreements. I've had these sorts of circular conversations in all different situations. All I was doing was offering my opinion. If you don't agree, that's fine. I'm pretty sure the "art" you and I both consume are far from the same.

I make two kinds of art: The drawings I make for a living, which I get paid to make. and 2) The paintings I make for my own personal amusement. If other people see it and like it, good for them but there is no higher purpose for me personally.

I guess you could argue that the shit I draw for money isn't really "art" (though I disagree), but it definitely has an owner and is subject to copyright law. I own my paintings, not the public, not my inspirations, just me.

I download shit like everyone else, but there is really no defense for it. The only defense I can offer is that if I like something enough I will go out and buy it.

I have some stuff on Flickr. I also did the art for the new Lucky Pineapple CD, though that one is really not my usual style of painting.

Flickr is blocked from work. I'll have to check it out when I get home.

Ahhh....well I have a lot of the same stuff up on myspace, but I'm guessing you would encounter the same problem there.

Just to clarify - I had no interest in seeing anyone agree on this topic when I posted it. I'm more interested in the differences of opinion (NOT arguments, just people voicing their thoughts).
